AMERICA 250: The Tavern, the Print Shop, and the Small Business Roots of America’s Founding - Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council

By Karen Kerrigan

Long before America became a global economic powerhouse, local entrepreneurs and small business owners helped build the civic culture, communication networks, and spirit of independence that made our nation possible. As America marks its 250th anniversary, it is important to note that the nation's founding was shaped not only in legislative halls but also inside the modest shops and taverns that dotted the colonial landscape.

The colonial tavern was far more than a place to drink. It served as the community's living room, a hub for news, debate, and organizing. Tavern keepers, often women and families running a side business, provided the physical space where citizens gathered to discuss taxes, rights, and resistance. Without these small establishments, the networks of communication that fueled the Revolution would have been far weaker.

Equally vital was the colonial print shop. Printers were the tech entrepreneurs of their day, operating small presses that published newspapers, pamphlets, and broadsides. They spread the ideas of liberty and circulated accounts of British actions. Men like Benjamin Franklin built their reputations and fortunes through these small businesses, using their shops to shape public opinion.

These small business owners were not passive observers. They were active participants in building a new nation. They took financial risks, managed supply chains, and navigated British regulations. Their daily work of running a shop or a tavern was itself an act of self-governance and economic independence.

As we reflect on 250 years of American history, we should remember that the spirit of enterprise and civic engagement that defined the founding era still lives in the small businesses across our country today.
