Asia’s founders are going global faster, sometimes even before they’re sure what their business is, says Stripe’s SEA MD

Southeast Asia's startup founders are no longer waiting to prove their local business model before looking overseas. According to Stripe's managing director for the region, many are going global almost immediately, sometimes even before they have fully nailed down what their company actually does. That shift marks a major change from the old playbook, where startups would spend years dominating a home market before daring to cross borders.

To keep up with that ambition, Stripe is rolling out new partnerships with a range of regional payment platforms. The list includes ShopeePay, GCash, and TrueMoney, among others. The idea is simple: when a founder in Jakarta or Manila wants to sell to customers in Bangkok or beyond, they should not have to stitch together a dozen different payment integrations. By plugging into these local wallets and payment methods, Stripe hopes to remove one of the biggest headaches in cross-border expansion.

The move also reflects a broader reality. Asian consumers are increasingly comfortable paying through digital wallets and bank transfers, and that varies wildly from country to country. A payment method that works in the Philippines might be useless in Thailand. Stripe's new approach lets businesses tap into those local preferences without building custom infrastructure from scratch. For founders who are still figuring out their product, that kind of flexibility matters. They can test new markets quickly, adjust on the fly, and worry less about the plumbing behind the scenes. The message is clear: the barriers to going global are coming down, and the startups that move fast will be the ones that benefit.
