Baltimore City has taken legal action against Agora Companies, a global internet marketing and supplements firm, accusing it of running deceptive business operations that specifically target vulnerable populations, particularly the elderly. The lawsuit, filed in city court, claims that Agora used misleading advertising and high-pressure sales tactics to push dietary supplements and financial newsletters to consumers, often promising unrealistic health or wealth benefits.
According to the city's legal filing, Agora's practices violated local consumer protection laws by failing to disclose key terms and by making false claims about product effectiveness. The complaint alleges that the company relied on aggressive telemarketing and direct mail campaigns that preyed on older adults, many of whom were convinced to spend thousands of dollars on products that did not deliver as advertised. City officials argue that these actions caused significant financial harm to residents and eroded trust in legitimate businesses.
The lawsuit seeks injunctive relief to halt these practices, as well as restitution for affected consumers and civil penalties. Agora Companies has not yet issued a public response to the allegations. This case adds to a growing list of legal challenges faced by the firm in recent years, as regulators and consumer advocates push for tighter oversight of the supplement and online marketing industries.
