BNY Adds Blockchain Capabilities to Transfer Agency Business

BNY Adds Blockchain Capabilities to Transfer Agency Business

Banking giant BNY is bringing blockchain technology to its transfer agency business. The bank on Wednesday unveiled its digital transfer agency platform, a move designed to modernize how it handles record-keeping for asset managers and issuers. The new system aims to replace traditional manual processes with a distributed ledger approach, allowing for faster and more transparent tracking of share ownership and transactions.

According to BNY executives, the shift addresses long-standing inefficiencies in the transfer agency space, where reconciliation and data management often lag behind other areas of financial services. By using blockchain, the bank says it can provide a single source of truth for all parties involved, reducing errors and settlement times. The platform is initially focused on private funds and alternative assets, where complex ownership structures have historically created administrative headaches.

The announcement comes as BNY continues to push deeper into digital assets and tokenization. The bank has been testing blockchain applications across custody, collateral management, and now transfer agency. Industry observers note that while many firms talk about blockchain in finance, BNY is one of the few large custodians actually deploying the technology in a core business line. The digital transfer agency is expected to go live with select clients later this year, with a broader rollout planned for 2025.
