Dollar General's Profitable Delivery Business Spurs Subscription Pilot

Dollar General's Profitable Delivery Business Spurs Subscription Pilot

Dollar General is moving deeper into the on-demand economy. The discount retailer reports that its delivery service, which fulfills 80 percent of orders from local stores within an hour, has turned into a profitable and growing sales channel. Now, the company is piloting a subscription program to lock in repeat customers.

The shift marks a significant change for a chain traditionally built on low prices and rural convenience. By leveraging its vast network of more than 20,000 stores as mini-fulfillment centers, Dollar General has avoided the costly infrastructure of standalone warehouses. This allows the company to offer speed without the heavy logistics investment that burdens many competitors.

Executives say the delivery business is not just covering its costs but contributing to overall margins. The subscription pilot, currently testing in select markets, aims to boost customer loyalty and increase order frequency. Shoppers who sign up pay a flat monthly fee in exchange for waived delivery charges on orders over a certain amount.

The strategy reflects a broader push to compete with larger rivals like Walmart and Amazon, both of which have invested heavily in fast shipping. Dollar General's advantage lies in its proximity to customers, especially in underserved rural areas where other delivery options are limited. If the subscription model proves successful, the company could roll it out nationally, further blurring the line between discount retail and instant delivery.
