Eastern Illinois University opened its doors on Oct. 10, 2026, for the Small Business Fest, an event that gathered local entrepreneurs and student run shops in one place to show off what they make and do. Vendors set up tables across the venue, offering handmade goods, food, crafts and services to visitors who stopped by throughout the day.
The fest gave student owners a chance to test their ideas in front of a real audience. Many of them balance classes with running a business, and events like this let them talk directly with customers, get feedback and build a following. Community sellers also took part, bringing products that reflect the character of the region.
Organizers said the goal was simple: connect people who make things with people who want to buy them, all while supporting the local economy. Shoppers walked away with unique items, and vendors walked away with new contacts and sales.
The event also served as a reminder that small businesses, whether started in a dorm room or a garage, play a real role in the life of a college town. By hosting the fest, the university gave those ventures a stage and a chance to grow.
