Gov. Mike DeWine and local leaders joined economic development officials Wednesday, Oct. 28 to celebrate a new Electra facility in Springfield that will manufacture revolutionary short-runway aircraft.
The company's decision to establish operations in the city marks a significant win for the region's manufacturing sector and reflects growing confidence in the local workforce. Electra is developing hybrid-electric aircraft designed to take off and land on runways as short as 300 feet, a capability that could reshape regional air travel.
During the announcement, DeWine praised the project as an example of Ohio's ability to attract advanced technology companies. He noted that the state's skilled labor pool and strong network of suppliers make it an ideal location for aerospace manufacturing. Local officials echoed those sentiments, pointing to the potential for new jobs and increased economic activity in the surrounding community.
Electra's aircraft uses blown-lift technology and hybrid-electric propulsion to serve routes that conventional planes cannot economically cover. The company has said its planes will carry passengers and cargo on trips between 50 and 500 miles, connecting smaller airports that currently lack reliable service.
The Springfield facility is expected to create manufacturing and engineering positions as production ramps up. Economic development leaders said the project could also draw suppliers and related businesses to the area, multiplying the impact beyond the company's own payroll.
Community members welcomed the news, citing the region's manufacturing heritage and the opportunity to position Springfield as a player in the emerging electric aviation industry. Construction and hiring timelines will be announced as the project moves forward.
