Jacksonville's debut IRONMAN triathlon drew nearly 2,000 athletes across Duval and St. Johns counties this weekend, but the event left a bitter taste for business owners in the historic Five Points district. Shopkeepers and restaurant operators say the road closures and detours severely limited customer access, turning a weekend that should have been busy into a financial bust.
"We were completely cut off," said one local cafe owner. "People couldn't get to us. We had staff ready, food prepped, and nobody could park within three blocks." The race route, which snaked through downtown and into Riverside, effectively sealed off key corridors. Regulars stayed away, and the promised foot traffic from spectators never materialized for many small shops.
City officials acknowledged the frustration. A spokesperson for the mayor's office said that while the event was a major success for tourism, they recognize the burden placed on neighborhood businesses. "We dropped the ball on communication," the spokesperson admitted. "We will work with organizers to ensure future events include direct outreach to affected merchants, better signage, and more accessible alternative routes."
For now, Five Points merchants are left counting the cost of a weekend they hoped would showcase their district but instead highlighted the growing pains of hosting a major international sporting event.
