Charles Bonfiglio arrived in Florida with roughly $30,000 to his name and a plan to build a business of his own. The plan ran into a wall almost immediately. Banks turned him down for a loan, and landlords refused to lease him space. Without capital or a signed lease, his dream of running an independent company stalled before it could start.
Instead of giving up, Bonfiglio changed course. He decided to join an established franchise system rather than launch something from scratch. That single decision solved both of his biggest problems at once. The franchise brand gave lenders and landlords confidence, which meant he could finally secure the financing and the location he needed to open his doors.
The franchise model also taught him lessons he could not have learned on his own. He studied how the parent company handled marketing, supply chains, staffing, and site selection. He watched how successful operators managed their books and how the system supported owners who followed the playbook. Over time, he stopped thinking like a single store owner and started thinking like someone who could build something much larger.
That shift in mindset paid off. Bonfiglio eventually grew his operation into a company with more than 150 stores. His story shows how a franchise can act as a bridge for entrepreneurs who have ambition and some savings but lack the track record that banks and landlords demand. It also highlights a less obvious benefit: the structure and mentorship that come with a franchise can teach an owner how to scale far beyond a single location.
