Letter | Rail merger would be a boon for businesses

As a small business owner in the building industry, I know how much businesses like ours depend on a reliable supply chain, including the rail network that moves materials and goods across the country. When rail service works well, it keeps costs down and helps companies like mine compete. When it does not, the effects ripple through every part of the economy.

That is why the proposed rail merger deserves serious consideration rather than quick dismissal. A stronger, more connected rail system could give small businesses better access to suppliers, shorten delivery times, and reduce the pressure of rising transportation costs. For builders, contractors, and manufacturers, those improvements are not abstract. They determine whether a project stays on schedule and whether a bid remains affordable.

Critics raise fair questions about competition and oversight. Those concerns should be addressed with clear rules and strong accountability. But rejecting the merger outright would ignore the real problems many businesses face every day: congested routes, unpredictable service, and limited options for moving freight.

A modern rail network is not just a convenience. It is basic infrastructure that supports jobs and local economies. If the merger can deliver better service without harming competition, it is worth pursuing. Small businesses cannot afford to wait while the system falls further behind.
