Maryland business owner killed in pedestrian crash remembered as musician and mentor

A Gaithersburg community is mourning the loss of a local business owner who was struck and killed by a vehicle earlier this week. Craig Budd Sr., known for his warmth, his guitar, and his willingness to guide young people, died at the scene of the crash on Monday evening.

Budd, who ran a small auto repair shop in the area for more than two decades, was crossing a street near his business when he was hit. Police have not released the driver's name, and the investigation is ongoing. No charges have been filed at this time.

Friends and family describe Budd as a man who wore many hats. By day, he fixed engines and balanced ledgers. By night, he played blues guitar at local venues, often inviting younger musicians to sit in with him. He taught several neighborhood kids how to change a tire and how to find the right chord progression, sometimes in the same afternoon.

His daughter, Rachel Budd, said her father never missed a chance to encourage someone. "He would give you the shirt off his back and then tell you how to sew it back together," she said through tears. "He was tough but kind. He wanted everyone to find their own path."

A memorial gathering is planned for Saturday at the shop, where friends will share stories and play some of his favorite songs. Budd is survived by two children and four grandchildren.
