Mayor, business owners cast blame after another River Market shooting

The Little Rock Police Department is investigating a shooting that happened over the weekend, just a few feet away from the Arkansas Times offices. The incident marks another act of violence in the River Market district, a area known for its restaurants, shops, and nightlife.

No injuries were reported in the immediate aftermath, but the gunfire sent people scrambling for cover. Witnesses described a chaotic scene as officers arrived to secure the block. Investigators have not announced any arrests or named a suspect.

Mayor Frank Scott Jr. addressed the shooting, pointing to what he called a small number of repeat offenders driving violence in the city. "We cannot allow a few bad actors to define our downtown," he said. Business owners, however, pushed back. Several said they feel abandoned by city leadership and want more police presence on weekends.

One restaurant owner, who asked not to be named, said the shooting happened near closing time when crowds are heaviest. "We pay taxes. We deserve to feel safe," the owner said. Others called for a stronger partnership between law enforcement and community groups.

The River Market has seen multiple shootings in recent months, raising questions about security cameras, lighting, and patrol schedules. City officials say they are reviewing those measures. Police ask anyone with information to contact detectives.
