No significant sex-based differences in timing of care for M-TEER patients

No significant sex-based differences in timing of care for M-TEER patients

For years, cardiology research pointed to a troubling pattern: women with severe mitral regurgitation often waited longer for corrective procedures than men. A new analysis, however, suggests that gap is closing, likely due to the rise of structured heart teams.

The study looked at patients undergoing transcatheter edge-to-edge repair, a minimally invasive option for those who are not good candidates for open surgery. Researchers examined the timing of care from initial diagnosis to the actual procedure, comparing men and women across multiple centers. The results showed no significant sex-based differences in how quickly patients were referred, evaluated, or treated.

This marks a clear shift from older data. Previously, women were more likely to have their symptoms dismissed or attributed to other conditions, leading to delays that could worsen heart function. The current findings indicate that the multidisciplinary approach, where cardiologists, imaging specialists, and surgeons review cases together, may be neutralizing those historical biases.

While the news is encouraging, the authors stress that vigilance is still needed. The analysis focused on patients who actually received the procedure, so it does not capture potential disparities in who gets referred in the first place. Still, the fact that once patients enter the system, they are treated with equal speed regardless of sex is a meaningful step forward for equity in cardiac care. The full findings were presented at a major cardiology conference this week.
