A coalition of small business owners in New York City is voicing strong opposition to a proposal from Mayor Zohran Mamdani that would establish city-owned grocery stores. Frank Garcia, chairman of the Multicultural Business Coalition, appeared on a recent program to discuss the potential impact, calling the plan a direct threat to the local economy.
Garcia argued that the city should not be competing with private enterprise, especially at a time when independent grocers are already struggling with rising rents, supply chain costs, and staffing shortages. "It's a concern," he said. "These are family-owned businesses that have been serving their communities for decades. The idea that the city can step in and do it better is not backed by reality."
The proposal, which aims to address food deserts and high prices in underserved neighborhoods, would see the city open and operate its own grocery stores. Supporters say it would ensure access to fresh, affordable food. But critics, including Garcia, warn that it would undercut existing businesses and lead to job losses.
Garcia also questioned the financial logic, noting that the city has a poor track record with running commercial operations. "We are talking about using taxpayer dollars to compete against the very people who pay those taxes," he said. "It does not make sense."
The debate is expected to intensify as the administration moves forward with feasibility studies. For now, small business owners are rallying to make their voices heard before any stores open their doors.
