Nord Anglia, Cognita, Inspired Education and other private equity-backed groups are profiting from history and rising global demand. These companies have built large networks of international schools that trade on the prestige of a British-style education, charging premium fees to families in Asia, the Middle East and beyond.

The model relies on a simple appeal. Parents want their children to gain fluency in English, earn qualifications that open doors to universities abroad and join a social circle that carries weight later in life. A name tied to Britain, or at least to the look and feel of a traditional British school, helps justify the cost.

Enrollment has climbed steadily for years. Rising wealth in emerging markets, frustration with local public systems and the desire to secure an advantage for the next generation have all fed demand. Private equity firms spotted the opportunity and moved in, buying existing schools, merging them into groups and expanding into new cities.
