A San Jose-based business has stepped up to organize a relief drive for victims of the devastating twin earthquakes that shook Venezuela. The company, along with several other Bay Area organizations, is now collecting essential supplies to send to the affected regions. The earthquakes, which struck in quick succession, have left thousands homeless and overwhelmed local emergency services.
The drive is focusing on items that are in short supply on the ground. Organizers are asking for non-perishable food, bottled water, first aid kits, and hygiene products. Heavy-duty tarps and blankets are also high on the list, as many survivors are sleeping outdoors. The collection point at the San Jose business will be open daily through the end of the month. Volunteers are sorting donations and preparing them for shipment.
Local community leaders have praised the effort, noting that the Bay Area has a large Venezuelan diaspora. For many families here, the disaster hits close to home. One organizer said the goal is to fill a shipping container within two weeks. They are also accepting monetary donations to cover freight costs. The response so far has been strong, with people dropping off bags of supplies throughout the day.
