U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich is denouncing President Trump's announcement that the United States will purchase diesel from Russia in an effort to lower fuel prices. Heinrich said the move contradicts the stated goal of standing firm against Moscow and questioned why the administration would send money to a country that has been the target of repeated sanctions.
"We don't do business with Russia," Heinrich said, arguing that buying Russian diesel undercuts domestic producers and hands leverage to a government that has shown no interest in changing its behavior. He added that the decision could undermine efforts to isolate Russia economically and called on the administration to explain how the plan serves American interests.
The announcement has drawn criticism from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle, who say the focus should be on boosting domestic energy production and refining capacity rather than relying on foreign suppliers. Supporters of the plan argue it could ease pressure on consumers at the pump, but critics say the short term relief is not worth the long term consequences.
Heinrich said he will push for answers about the deal and wants to know whether it complies with existing sanctions. The debate is expected to continue as fuel prices remain a central concern for voters.
