Two downtown Fort Wayne business owners are raising concerns about the city's decision to place a new 24/7 homeless services center in their neighborhood. While both say they support the need for such a facility, they worry about the immediate impact on their shops and customers.
The center, which will operate around the clock, is set to open in a building that previously housed a different social service organization. One business owner, who has operated in the area for over a decade, said the location was chosen without enough input from nearby merchants. He fears that an increase in foot traffic from the center could lead to loitering, litter, and a drop in foot traffic from paying customers.
Another owner expressed similar concerns, noting that the area has seen recent improvements and new investments. She said she worries that the center could undo that progress and make it harder to attract families and office workers to the block. Both owners emphasized that they are not against helping the homeless, but they question why the city did not consider a site farther from retail and dining.
City officials have defended the location, citing its proximity to existing transit routes and other support services. They argue that the center is part of a broader strategy to address homelessness more effectively. However, the business owners remain skeptical and say they plan to voice their concerns at the next city council meeting. They hope for more transparency and a clearer plan for managing the potential downsides.
