Stripe has closed its largest acquisition ever, buying the artificial intelligence startup OpenRouter for $7.5 billion. The move pairs Stripe's massive payments network with OpenRouter's platform that helps companies manage and route their spending across multiple AI models.
OpenRouter, which launched just a few years ago, acts as a middleman for businesses that want to use different AI systems without locking into a single provider. Instead of building separate connections to each model maker, companies can use OpenRouter's single interface to compare prices, send requests, and track usage across services from firms like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google.
For Stripe, the purchase is a direct bet on the future of AI commerce. The company already processes payments for many AI startups, but with OpenRouter it gains a front-row seat to how businesses allocate their AI budgets. Stripe says it will keep OpenRouter running as an independent service while also using its technology to improve how AI vendors bill and settle payments.
The deal is one of the largest in the AI sector this year and signals that the infrastructure layer of the AI boom is becoming as valuable as the models themselves. Analysts note that OpenRouter's revenue has grown quickly as more companies shift from experimenting with AI to running it in production. Stripe expects the acquisition to close in the coming months, pending regulatory review. No major changes to OpenRouter's team or product lineup have been announced.
