A vibrant marketplace in Tel Aviv recently brought together dozens of immigrant entrepreneurs, offering them a platform to present their unique products and share the stories behind their new lives in Israel. The event, known as Shuk Olim, was designed to highlight the growing contribution of small businesses started by new immigrants, or olim.
Devon Conway of Nefesh B'Nefesh, the organization that helped coordinate the market, noted the personal element woven into every stall. "Every single booth has an oleh with a story, and they're selling their products from the small business that they opened here in Israel after their aliyah," Conway said. From handmade jewelry and artisanal foods to innovative tech accessories and clothing, the goods on display reflected the diverse backgrounds and talents of the entrepreneurs.
For many participants, the event was more than just a sales opportunity. It served as a networking hub and a chance to build a customer base in a new country. One vendor, a recent immigrant from France, explained that starting a business was a way to integrate quickly and contribute to the local economy. Another, who moved from South Africa, said the market gave her the confidence to pursue her passion for baking professionally.
Organizers hope that Shuk Olim will become a recurring event, helping to foster a supportive community for immigrant business owners. The turnout of shoppers, both locals and fellow olim, underscored a growing appetite for supporting these new ventures. For the entrepreneurs, the day was a clear sign that their hard work and risk were being recognized in their adopted home.
