The U.S. Department of the Interior has announced a significant settlement with the French energy company, TotalEnergies SE. As part of the agreement, the firm will relinquish its development rights to two major offshore wind leases off the coast of New York and North Carolina.
In exchange for walking away from these renewable energy projects, the Trump administration has agreed to pay the company approximately one billion dollars. This substantial sum compensates TotalEnergies for its initial investments and development costs on the now-canceled wind farms.
Officials stated that the settlement resolves longstanding legal disputes over the leases. Notably, the agreement includes provisions for the French multinational to redirect its investments toward domestic fossil fuel initiatives. This shift aligns with the administration's broader energy policy, which has consistently prioritized oil and gas development while rolling back support for renewable energy sectors.
The decision has drawn immediate criticism from environmental groups and clean energy advocates. They argue that forfeiting established offshore wind projects represents a major setback for American renewable energy infrastructure and the nation's climate goals. The move leaves the future of wind development in these Atlantic regions uncertain.
