A cart loaded with prepared meals, specialty cheeses, and wine points to someone shopping for an occasion. Neither is better on its own, but the mix matters. If your store sees mostly bare bones baskets while a competitor down the street sees fuller ones, something is pulling customers away.

Basket size is not just about how much money lands in the register. It reflects whether shoppers trust your selection and feel your prices are fair. A shrinking basket often shows up before a drop in foot traffic. By the time the parking lot looks empty, the warning signs were already there for weeks.

The lesson is simple. Pay attention to what people carry out the door. Watch your own lanes, and when you can, watch the competition. The pattern will tell you more than most reports.
