Kelly Ehlers was an executive at a major marketing firm, climbing the ladder and expecting a promotion. When she found out she was pregnant, she was excited to share the news with her boss. Instead of congratulations, she got a meeting with HR. Within days, she was escorted out of the building. Her job was gone, and so was her health insurance, right before her first trimester ended.

Within eighteen months, she had hired her first full-time employee. Two years later, her agency had a team of twelve and was pulling in over two million dollars a year in revenue. She now runs a company that manages social strategy for national consumer brands, and she works from a home office so she can be present for her daughter.

Ehlers says the firing was the best thing that ever happened to her career. She never planned to be an entrepreneur, and she still does not love the risk. But she learned that losing a job does not have to mean losing your identity. She built a business on her own terms, and she has not looked back since.
