The era of easy money for traditional software companies is coming to an end, and Wall Street is starting to panic. According to analysts at Stifel, the old ways of selling software-think long-term licenses, hefty upfront fees, and slow upgrades-are no longer sustainable. In a blunt note to clients, they wrote, "It is now very clear that the software we've known for 20 years is not going to be fine, unless it adapts."
The warning comes as a wave of tech stocks, once seen as safe bets, have been hammered in recent months. Investors are losing patience with companies that rely on legacy models, especially as artificial intelligence and cloud-based services reshape the industry. The Stifel team argues that many software firms are stuck in a "value trap," where their current revenue streams look solid but are actually shrinking in real terms.
The problem is twofold. First, customers are demanding more flexible, usage-based pricing instead of rigid annual contracts. Second, the rise of generative AI is making older software feel obsolete overnight. Companies that fail to pivot quickly risk being left behind entirely. The analysts predict a brutal shakeout, where only the most agile players survive. For now, the message is clear: adapt or watch your stock price evaporate.
