The Trump Organization has filed for federal trademark rights covering any airport that uses the president's name. The move, confirmed by the family business, is a bid to secure branding control over potential future "Trump Airports."
This action comes amidst local discussions in West Palm Beach, Florida, regarding a proposal to rename the local airport, currently known as Palm Beach International, to include the president's name. The airport is located near the Trump-owned Mar-a-Lago resort.
A company representative stated that while they are seeking the broad trademark, they do not intend to charge a licensing fee to the Florida county should it proceed with the renaming. The filing is described as a protective measure to ensure consistent standards for any facility using the Trump name.
Trademark attorneys note that such an application faces significant legal hurdles, as geographic names and the names of public officials are typically difficult to trademark, especially for existing public infrastructure. The application will undergo a lengthy review process by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
