Third-year law student Ediz Kalkan is entering the legal market with a distinct advantage, having honed his skills through a dedicated Business Law Concentration. His journey combined rigorous academic training with real-world experience, preparing him to advise corporate clients effectively.
Kalkan built a formidable foundation through a curriculum covering essential areas like Mergers and Acquisitions, Venture Capital, Securities Regulation, and Corporate Finance. This coursework provided deep doctrinal knowledge and practical insights into how corporate law interacts with markets and government agencies.
"The courses equipped me with a strong foundation in universal corporate legal principles, fluency in the jargon, and insight into how corporate law intersects with markets," Kalkan noted.
Beyond the classroom, mentorship from faculty and industry guest speakers proved invaluable. His practical training was accelerated by participation in the Startup Legal Garage, where he assisted real clients with legal needs under the guidance of practicing attorneys. This experience socialized him to the etiquette and expectations of being a junior attorney.
Further hands-on experience came from a summer in-house role at a commercial bank and ongoing work as a law clerk at a firm. These positions exposed him to a range of clients, from startups to public companies, strengthening his confidence in handling complex issues and client interactions.
"Through these experiences, I’ve learned that effectively advising clients takes more than subject-matter expertise," Kalkan said. His training has inspired plans to pursue an MBA to become a more well-rounded business advisor.
He credits the program's robust course catalog, accomplished professors, and the law school's prime location near major innovative companies for providing exceptional opportunities. The concentration is one of twelve such programs designed to give Juris Doctor students specialized expertise for their legal careers.
