A former owner of a chiropractic business in Libertyville has been convicted by a federal jury for orchestrating a scheme that defrauded an insurance company out of more than $600,000. The verdict, handed down this week, found the man guilty of billing for services that were never actually provided to patients.
Prosecutors presented evidence that the chiropractor submitted false claims over several years, inflating patient visits and fabricating treatments. The insurance company paid out over $600,000 based on these fraudulent billings. The scheme unraveled after auditors flagged suspicious patterns in the billing records, leading to a federal investigation.
The defendant now faces a potential prison sentence of up to 20 years on each count of health care fraud. Sentencing has not yet been scheduled. The case highlights ongoing efforts by federal authorities to crack down on medical billing fraud, which costs insurers and consumers billions annually. The former owner's attorney declined to comment after the verdict.
