Months after a local investigation first highlighted safety issues at Comiskey Park, business owners in the surrounding Mid-City area say they are still waiting for meaningful action. Frustrated by ongoing theft, vandalism, and reports of aggressive behavior near the stadium, a coalition of shop owners and restaurant operators has formed a new safety network.
The group meets weekly to share surveillance footage, coordinate with private security, and communicate directly with police. "We were tired of calling and getting no response," said one restaurant owner who asked not to be named due to safety concerns. "Now we have a direct line to the precinct, and we share a group chat for real-time alerts."
Crime data from the past six months shows a spike in property crimes and public intoxication incidents within a half-mile radius of the park, especially on game days. Business owners say the problem extends beyond rowdy fans. They point to a lack of consistent police patrols during off-hours and slow response times to 911 calls.
The coalition has also started a petition demanding increased lighting in parking lots and more visible foot patrols during evening events. City officials have acknowledged the concerns but have not announced any new funding or policy changes. For now, the business owners say they will continue to rely on each other. "We cannot wait for someone else to fix this," another merchant said. "We have to protect our own streets."
