Seattle City Councilmember Rob Saka has voiced serious concerns about the direction of the local economy, stating he is "gravely concerned" about the health of the city's business environment. In a recent statement, Saka warned that city leaders must stop treating the private sector as an enemy if they want to reverse troubling economic trends.
Saka argued that the current regulatory and tax policies are pushing companies and jobs out of Seattle. He specifically pointed to the need for a more balanced approach that supports both workers and the businesses that employ them. The councilmember cautioned against what he called a tendency to "villainize" corporations and landlords, saying such an attitude discourages investment and makes it harder for small businesses to survive.
His comments come amid ongoing debates over public safety, homelessness, and commercial vacancy rates in downtown Seattle. Saka emphasized that while social equity is important, a thriving economy is necessary to fund the city's priorities. He urged his colleagues to focus on making Seattle more predictable and welcoming for entrepreneurs.
"If we keep sending the message that business is the problem, we cannot be surprised when they leave," Saka said. He called for a "reset" in the city's relationship with the private sector, stressing that collaboration, not confrontation, is the path forward.
