Seniors: Carol Watson, 72

Carol Watson of LaFayette proves that passion has no retirement age. At 72, she is the vibrant force behind Carol Watson Greenhouse and Landscaping, routinely working six- to seven-day weeks because, as she says, “I just love it.”

Her life in gardens began literally when she learned to walk in her grandfather’s plot. Today, she runs the business her mother started in 1981, having worked there full-time for over three decades. Watson credits her mother for imparting a wealth of horticultural knowledge and an energetic spirit.

Spanning seven acres with four greenhouses, her operation is renowned for quality plants and unique, locally made products. Watson finds deep joy in educating customers, helping children build terrariums, and creatively merchandising artisan pottery throughout the shop.

Her dedication extends beyond daily operations. She actively draws the community in through television gardening segments, a popular social media presence, and inventive events. These include fundraising concerts for the local orchestra and themed sock hops benefiting regional food banks. A beloved recent innovation invites customers to bring their dogs inside the warm greenhouse during winter months, an idea born from her own need to walk her pet.

For Carol Watson, the work is a perennial source of joy. She thrives on tending plants, curating unusual finds, and fostering a vibrant, community-focused space, with no plans to slow down.
