A Washington, D.C. based food technology startup has secured new funding to push its artificial intelligence driven recipe platform further into the mainstream. Proxy Foods AI announced it raised $6 million in a seed round, with the round led by longtime investor and Monumental Sports founder Ted Leonsis. The company says the capital will go toward scaling its AI tools that help food manufacturers and product developers create new recipes faster, cutting down on the trial and error that typically slows down innovation.

The platform uses machine learning to analyze ingredient interactions, flavor profiles, and nutritional targets. Instead of relying on traditional lab testing for every variation, food scientists can input parameters like texture, cost limits, or allergen restrictions, and the system generates viable formulas in minutes. Proxy Foods AI claims this approach reduces development time by up to 40 percent, which could be a major advantage for brands racing to launch plant based alternatives or healthier packaged goods.

Leonsis, who has backed a range of tech and media ventures, said in a statement that the startup addresses a clear bottleneck in the food industry. He noted that consumer demand for novel products is outpacing the ability of legacy R and D processes to deliver them. The funding round also included participation from several unnamed angel investors with backgrounds in food science and supply chain logistics.

The company plans to use the money to double its engineering team and build out partnerships with mid sized food producers. Proxy Foods AI also intends to release a self service version of its software later this year, allowing smaller brands to access the same tools that were previously reserved for large corporate clients. The startup was co founded by a team of former food scientists and software developers who met while working on a failed meal kit project, which they say taught them exactly where the industry loses time and money.
