UPMC is separating its aviation health care division and combining it with a New York company as part of a significant investment deal. The move places the Pittsburgh-based health system alongside Northwell Health in reshaping how medical services are delivered to the aviation industry.
The arrangement transfers UPMC's aviation medicine operations into a standalone entity backed by outside capital. Financial terms were not disclosed. The new structure is expected to let the unit operate with more flexibility than it had inside a large hospital network, where aviation services competed with core clinical priorities for resources and attention.
The aviation health care business provides medical exams, fitness-for-duty evaluations and related services for pilots, flight crews and air traffic personnel. Those services must meet federal standards, and demand has grown as airlines work through a backlog of pilot certifications and crew medical clearances.
Northwell Health, New York's largest health system, recently took a similar step with its own aviation medicine arm. The parallel moves suggest large providers see specialized occupational health lines as better suited to independent operation, where they can pursue contracts with airlines, unions and regulators without the overhead of a full hospital system.
UPMC has not said whether the spinoff will affect staffing at its existing aviation medicine locations. Patients and employers using the service should see continuity in scheduling and certification processing during the transition, according to the health system. The deal is subject to customary regulatory review and is expected to close later this year.
