Nashville hemp businesses brace for impact as state THCA restrictions take effect July 1

A major shift is coming to Tennessee's hemp industry on July 1, and business owners across Nashville are bracing for what could be a difficult transition. New state restrictions targeting THCA, a compound found in raw hemp that converts to THC when heated, are set to take effect. For many local shops and growers, this means a scramble to adjust their product lines or face potential penalties.

The regulations effectively close a loophole that allowed high-THCA hemp products to be sold legally, even though they can produce psychoactive effects similar to marijuana. Store owners say the change will force them to pull popular items from shelves, including certain vapes, edibles, and flower strains. Some estimate that THCA-based products make up a significant portion of their revenue, and replacing that income will not be easy.

"We are looking at a complete overhaul of our inventory," one Nashville retailer said. "We have spent months building relationships with suppliers who specialize in THCA, and now that is gone overnight." Others worry about confusion among customers who may not understand why their usual products are no longer available.

The new rules also require stricter testing and labeling, adding costs that smaller businesses may struggle to absorb. While some larger operations have the resources to pivot quickly, mom-and-pop shops fear they could be pushed out entirely. Industry advocates have argued that the restrictions are too broad and could hurt legitimate businesses without addressing public safety concerns.

As July 1 approaches, many in Nashville's hemp community are watching closely, hoping for clarity from state regulators. For now, they are left to adapt as best they can, with some already planning to shift toward CBD-dominant products or other legal alternatives. The coming weeks will reveal just how deep the impact runs.
